20th Annual Community Service and Scholarship Awards Dinner

In a historic year for the Northern Virginia Urban League (NOVAUL), which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2010, education and its impact on the social and economic empowerment of African Americans and other under-served communities.

On April 30, 2010, at the Hilton Tysons Corner in McLean, Va., NOVAUL held its 20th Annual Community Service and Scholarship Awards Dinner, where thirteen of Northern Virginia’s top high school seniors were awarded a collective $75,000 toward their college education. In addition, NOVAUL honored two local business leaders for their commitment to education and community service in Northern Virginia. The event, which raised $500,000 in corporate sponsorships, was a bright spot in an otherwise bleak fundraising year for many local nonprofit organizations in the region.

NOVAUL is gearing up for this year's 21st Annual Community Service and Scholarship Awards Dinner, which will take place on Friday April 1, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. The civil rights organization will honor groundbreaking leaders in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. NOVAUL will also award ten college scholarships of $5,000 each to the region's highest achieving high school students. "We are honoring some of the world's most prolific science and technology achievers not only to recognize their accomplishments, but to show our youth that it is possible to achieve extraordinary greatness in these areas," said Lavern J. Chatman, NOVAUL President and CEO. To learn more about this year's awards dinner and NOVAUL's programs, visit www.nvul.org.
