American Sephardi Federation 2010 Gala Benefit Dinner

The American Sephardi Federation hosted its Annual Gala Benefit Dinner on Monday, December 13, 2010.

The dinner was part of a year-long series of events during 2010-2011 dedicated to "Celebrating 2,000 Years of Jewish Life in Morocco." The events are taking place under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

A special honor was bestowed upon the King during the ceremony and was accepted on his behalf by Ambassador-at-Large to the King, The Hon. Serge Berdugo. The keynote address was given by The Hon. Marc C. Ginsberg, former U.S. Ambassador to Morocco and the first Jewish American to serve as U.S. Ambassador to an Arab country.

In front of more than 300 guests including international dignitaries and diplomats from Canada, France, Israel and Morocco, King Mohammed VI, was feted as the most recent in successive generations of Sultans and Kings who courageously defended the values of their country and its Jewish citizens. Mr. Berdugo related the King's direct quote saying: “The distinctive features of the Moroccan identity stem from a deep respect for the revered religions, including Judaism. Indeed, Moroccan Judaism – with a history of nearly three thousand years – is a key component of our identity.”
