Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health Sports Ball

The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health (AAIUH) celebrated Sports Ball 2010, their 16th annual black tie & sports shoes gala, on Tuesday, April 13th at Pier 60/Chelsea Piers.

Hosted by Otis Livingston (CBS 2, Sports Anchor) and Michelle Miller (Correspondent, CBS News), more than 500 guests gathered to celebrate the legacy of tennis champion and humanitarian Arthur Ashe. Celebrity guests included former New York City Mayor David Dinkins, NFL Hall of Famer Harry Carson, former NY State Comptroller H. Carl McCall, and NBA Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens. Former NY Liberty All-Star basketball player Kym Hampton was the celebrity host for the cocktail reception.

During dinner, AAIUH honored individuals who leverage their status to make a difference in the lives of others. The 2010 Leadership Award recipients were Seth Abraham (Former President, HBO Sports & Madison Square Garden), Greater New York Hospital Association, Dr. Michael Lucchesi (SUNY Downstate Medical Center), George Martin (Executive Director, NFL Alumni Association), Selena Roberts (Sports Journalist), and Boyd Tinsley (Dave Matthews Band). At the end of the evening, each guest received a goody bag with a pair of comfortable and stylish Tom’s Shoes.

Sports Ball is a party with a purpose and the funds raised at the gala support the Institute’s programs that encourage people to take a pro-active approach to their health. Arthur Ashe founded the Institute in 1992 with a simple but powerful goal: improved health care and education for America’s urban residents. Arthur knew that many preventable diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, are the result of inadequate health care delivery, late detection, and insufficient health education. Arthur Ashe passed away in 1993 after contracting the AIDS virus from a blood transfusion but the Institute, led by Dr. Ruth Browne (CEO), remains true to his vision.
