Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC: A Night of Dreams

First-generation Chinese-American children honored their families' journeys to America and depicted their dreams for the future in their original artwork displayed during a first-time art showcase and fundraiser, hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters.

A Night of Dreams, held at the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) on May 20th encouraged support for these children and their dreams. The well attended event met the Committee’s fundraising goals and helped raise awareness about the over 20,000 Chinese children currently living in poverty in New York City. Supporting Asian communities with immigrant families transitioning to New York City was the evening’s theme. AMC members expressed how sharing their experiences and mentoring immigrant youth in the BigsNYC New American Program will help children overcome the unique obstacles they face while adjusting to a new culture, language, and customs.

A Night of Dreams was developed to encourage the youth in the BigsNYC New American Program to find ways to cope with and overcome the difficulties they experience when trying to articulate their identities and aspirations, dream big and think outside the box. The exhibit included drawings, paintings, collage, photography and poetry that depicted their visions for themselves and for their communities and paid tribute to their Asian heritage.

Richard Fu, a Big Brother and President of the Asian Mentoring Committee said, “Many people don’t realize that so many of these kids need help, that they do live in poverty and that a lot of them struggle. Our event raised much-needed funds and encouraged more Asian-American adults to become mentors, particularly those who speak or understand Cantonese and Chinese.”

Executive Director of MOCA, Alice Mong, is a Big Sister at BigsNYC and shared that her interest in the event was not just cultural but also personal. On behalf of the Museum, she offered to host this annual event next year.
