CARMA Foundation's Geminis Give Back Fundraiser

On June 13th, hundreds came out to celebrate Melky Jean’s 3rd Annual Geminis Give Back Fundraiser for the CARMA Foundation.

Ms. Melky Jean, a Grammy nominated singer and sister of Wyclef, started the CARMA Foundation’s Geminis Give Back event in 2007 as a personal birthday fundraiser for Haiti. “I used to feel disconnected from my roots,” Jean said. “Now I – and anyone else who would like to join us – can use my birthday as an opportunity to give back.”

The beautiful, talented actress and producer, Vivica A. Fox hosted the event at 1OAK in the Meat Packing district in Manhattan. Musical legends Patti LaBelle, Wyclef Jean, reggae artist Serani and Melky Jean had everyone on their feet until 4 o’ clock in the morning. Patti LaBelle opened the night with her heart-rending rendition of of “A Change is Gonna Come”. Wyclef Jean, known for his famous onstage antics, didn’t disappoint as he played the guitar with his teeth.

Other attendees included Wyclef’s wife, designer Marie Claudette Jean;, Sedeck, newly crowned Miss USA® Rima Fakih, Matt Rich, Naomi Preizler, fresh from Givenchy’s Paris Runway, now the face of Anna Sui, Restaurateur Danae Cappelletto, and models Ashley Graham Timothy Palmer.

Proceeds from the event will help rebuild schools in Haiti as well as create a soup kitchen in Haiti as part of CARMA Foundation’s ongoing CARMA Cares Program. The funds will also be used to rebuild an orphanage/school and to purchase clothes for 65 orphans in Port-au- Prince living in a tent city.

The CARMA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that strives to measurably improve the health of women and children in Haiti.
