Carnegie Hall's 120th Anniversary Celebration with James Taylor

Tonight, Carnegie Hall launched its year-long 120th birthday celebration with a sold out one-night-only benefit gala event hosted by renowned singer/songwriter James Taylor in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage.

This festive evening paid tribute to Carnegie Hall’s illustrious history, highlighting many of the extraordinary musical and cultural events that have taken place on the Hall’s legendary stages over the past twelve decades. Featured special guests included: Barbara Cook, Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Kevin Pollak, Dianne Reeves, and Sting, with members of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, among others. Taylor and special guests paid homage to the Hall’s diverse history with pop, Broadway, folk, jazz, comedy, and spoken word selections. The gala, attended by more than 600 guests, raised over $2.8 million in support of Carnegie Hall’s artistic and education programming.

The James Taylor Gala event was chaired by Clarissa and Edgar Bronfman, Jr. The evening included a pre-concert reception in Carnegie Hall’s Rohatyn Room and an after-party dinner at The Museum of Modern Art with the performers, following the concert.

Carnegie Hall officially turns 120 on Thursday, May 5, 2011 with an all-star gala benefit concert featuring the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Music Director Alan Gilbert. Joining them will be pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Gil Shaham, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma as guest soloists in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, and vocalist Audra McDonald performing songs of Duke Ellington. Rounding out the program will be Dvorák’s Carnival Overture and Gershwin’s An American in Paris, which had its premiere at Carnegie Hall in 1928.
