Eighth Annual September Concert to Fill the Skies with Music

Eighth Annual September Concert to Fill the Skies with Music

On Friday, September 11, 2009, across America and around the world, the skies will come alive with music as The September Concert Foundation organizes its eighth annual global day of music for peace.

On that day professional and amateur musicians will perform classical music, jazz, rock & roll – all kinds of music in all kinds of venues – from parks and squares, schools, libraries, churches, office building lobbies and plazas to cafés, stores, and senior centers. What began as a one person’s dream to fill the skies of New York on September 11th in 2002 has since grown into a global event.

Among this year’s concerts are the simultaneous concerts organized by British Memorial Garden Trust in New York (Hanover Square at 12:30pm) and in London (Grosvenor Square at 5:30 pm, featuring The Regimental Band of the Coldstream Guards and The Band and Bugles of the Rifles); 15 concerts in the city of Rome, with the closing concert to be held in the Sala Santa Cecilia at the Auditorium Parco della Musica for 2800 people; in Japan, 68 concerts will take place over 3 days; more concerts will be held in countries such as Ghana, United Arab Emirates, Haiti and Spain.

In New York City, here are a few highlights:

New York Public Library- Watch Tottenville HS choir from Staten Island perform Give Us Hope.

Union Square - At noon, sax player Oran Etkin, a Jewish Israeli having grown up in the US, will play with Abdoulaye Diabate, a Muslim from Mali.

Rockefeller Center - Children of National Dance Institute (public school program) will perform at 5 pm. This is their cream of the crop Celebration team and they are truly amazing.

Washington Square- 12:30pm-5pm performances by students from Little Red Schoolhouse and Elisabeth Irwin High School. New York City will be joined by nearly 40 U.S. cities. Our first concert in Hawaii will be held in Maui this year.

All concerts adhere to three principles: Anyone can organize a concert of any style; all music and musicians are treated equally regardless of genre or background; and all concerts are free.

“The September Concert is an opportunity for people to come together once a year and be united in hopes of peace and celebration of our universal humanity,” says Haruko Smith, founder and chairperson of The September Concert Foundation. “Music has a unique power to do that.”

Towards the evening, a Gala Event sponsored by The Rauschenberg
Foundation at the United Nations Delegates Dining Room was held to
benefit the September Concert. The evening was a success with guests
walking away with an original Darryl Pottorf print.
