Father's Day/Mother's Day Council 68th Father of the Year Awards

The National Father's Day Committee honored six outstanding men at its 68th Annual "Father of the Year" Awards presentation at the New York Sheraton Hotel & Tower on Thursday, June 18, 2009.

Proceeds of the luncheon will benefit Save the Children, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to making lasting positive change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world.

The benefit luncheon and awards presentation was hosted by MSNBC's Chris
Matthews. The 2009 Father of the Year honorees included:

. Michael "Coach K" Krzyzewski, Basketball Coach, Duke University

. General D. H. Petraeus, Commander, United States Central
Command, U.S. Army

. George Stephanopoulos, ABC News Journalist

. Jonathan M. Tisch, Co-Chairman of Loews Corp

. Al Unser Sr., Motorsports Racing Legend

. Ronald Wurtzburger, President of Peerless Clothing

The National Father's Day committee, along with Men's Health Magazine and the Sani Family Foundation also honored the 2009's All Star Dad winner, Robert Wunder of Cape May, New Jersey. This award recognizes a special father who continuously goes above and beyond in not only his commitment to his own children, but to his community and those children needing positive role models to guide and support their growth and development.

The National Father's Day Council is part of the Father's Day / Mother's Day Council, Inc. a non-profit membership association that has as its mission, the recognition and awarding of honors to role model contemporary Fathers and Mothers, while at the same time contributing to issues affecting the life and well-being of men, women and families. Past honorees have included Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, Generals Douglas MacArthur, Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkopf, sports notables Dwyane Wade, George Forman and Steve Young and communications leaders Tim Russert and Brian Williams.

To date, the Father's Day/Mother's Day Council has donated nearly $21 million to meaningful charities nationwide, which includes more than $3.2 million in 2008.
