FOUNTAIN HOUSE SYMPOSIUM AND LUNCHEON
05/02/2011 - By New York, NY

FOUNTAIN HOUSE SYMPOSIUM AND LUNCHEON

The 8th annual Fountain House Symposium and Luncheon took place on May 2nd, 2011, at the Grand Ballroom of The Pierre in New York City.

The event, titled “Understanding Neuroplasticity: How the Brain Heals Itself,” raised more than one million dollars.

Nearly 600 guests were on hand as the Fountain House Humanitarian Award was presented to Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD, one of the foremost authorities on manic depression. Dr. Jamison also lives with the illness and through her work has educated, enlightened and brought hope to people around the world.

This yearly event was founded to advance community knowledge about mental illness and to reduce the associated stigma. Funds raised support the programs of Fountain House, an internationally recognized non-profit organization that since 1948 has worked to better the lives of people living with major mental illness. Fountain House is one of the world’s leading mental health models, providing employment, education, and housing opportunities to people living with serious mental illness. This successful model has been replicated by hundreds of Fountain House programs serving tens of thousands of people worldwide.

Dr. Jamison, Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center, was also a Symposium panelist. Joining her on the panel were: Herbert Pardes, MD, CEO of New York Presbyterian Hospital; and Benjamin D. Philpot, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Physiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill.

These eminent panelists enlightened the assembled guests about the increasing evidence that the brain has a far greater capacity for change than was previously believed, and that the wiring of the brain responds to external experience such as social contact, education and work. Fountain House has long been dedicated to enriching its members’ lives by helping them to enter or re-enter the world of work, school and community.

Chairs for the event were: Patricia Begley, Kitty de Chazal, Lorna Hyde Graev, Alexandra A. Herzan, Anne Mai, and Lynn Nicholas, PsyD. Program Chair: Andrea Roy. Corporate Chair: Kim S. Fennebresque, Dahlman Rose & Co. Consuelo Mack, managing editor and anchor of “Consuelo Mack WealthTrack,” served as Master of Ceremonies.
