HealthCorps’ Garden of Good & Evil Gala

HealthCorps took its fight against child obesity to Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers for its Fourth Annual Gala, The Garden of Good & Evil, held on Wednesday, April 21.

Hosted by HealthCorps Founders Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa, the Gala honored four individuals making considerable contributions to the health and well-being of American youth – Tara Guber, Founder of YogaEd; Gary Hirschberg, President and CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm; George Naddaff, CEO of U Food Grill; and Kerry Rhodes, Safety with the Arizona Cardinals and Founder of Rhodes Foundation.

The star-studded event offered a magical evening of dining, dancing and entertainment. Guests were treated to performances by Caron Wheeler, two-time Grammy winner and former lead singer of Soul II Soul; Actor, Performer and Diabetes Awareness Advocate Ben Vereen; and Broadway actor, producer and choreographer Stepp Stewart who returned with his dance troupe to perform an original Gala song and dance composition. The Eturnity Band kept crowds moving on the dance floor.

Celebrity supporters and HealthCorps Ambassadors who came to support HealthCorps’ mission to stem the rise in child obesity and turn Americans into health activitists included R & B sensation Trey Songz; Actor and Model Adam Senn; Chef and Author Rocco DiSpirito; Actress and Author Carol Alt; ESPN Anchor Jesse Palmer; Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton; Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela; Mayor of Sacramento and former NBA Star Kevin Johnson and four-time Olympian and author Joetta Clark Diggs.

Dr. Oz, heart surgeon and host of the nationally syndicated talk show, “The Dr. Oz Show,” and Lisa Oz, author of newly published book “Us: Transforming Ourselves and the Relationships that Matter Most,” founded HealthCorps to help stem the rise in child obesity and teen suicide rates in schools and communities across the country. Like a Peace Corps for Health, HealthCorps engages recent college graduates as in-school educators and mentors through a two-year full time assignment at a public high school.

The Gala included a cocktail reception with healthy samplings; live and silent auctions; programming that captured the spirit of HealthCorps’ work around the country; a seated dinner and dancing.

HealthCorps major supporters and partners for the Gala included Regional Sponsors California Walnut Board and Chiquita; School Sponsors the Apollo Group, Florida East Coast Realty, Yvette and Joseph Mallah, sanofi-aventis; and Coordinator/Curriculum Sponsors Columbia Presbyterian Department of Surgery, Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office Inc., Morgan Stanley, VEMMA Nutrition and WAT-AAH!
