Hospital for Joint Diseases Gala

The Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD) at NYU Langone Medical Center raised over $1.6 million at its 26th annual gala held at The American Museum of Natural History.

The gala honored Frank A. Olson, chairman emeritus of The Hertz Corporation, and Andrew D. Rosenberg, MD, professor and executive vice chair, Department of Anesthesiology, and chief of anesthesiology at HJD, and was chaired by Gary D. Cohn, president and COO of Goldman Sachs. Soledad O'Brien, anchor and special correspondent for CNN/U.S., was special guest speaker.

This year's gala celebrated HJD's accomplishments as one of only five specialty hospitals in orthopaedics, rheumatology, neurology and rehabilitation in the country and its century of dedication to the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. Through its physicians' and researchers' discoveries in medical and surgical innovation, HJD has earned international recognition in research, education and patient care – and improved the lives of countless people throughout the world. It is currently ranked among the nation's top 10 hospitals for both orthopaedics and rheumatology by the U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals 2011-2012" survey.
HJD offers one of the most advanced orthopaedic programs in the region for musculoskeletal disorders and has the largest pediatric orthopaedic program in New York City. In addition, HJD is accredited by The Joint Commission and the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Those in attendance included: Ken Langone, chairman of the Board of Trustees, NYU Langone Medical Center, Lisa Pevaroff Cohn, Felix Kaufman, PhD, Patricia and William Perlmuth, David Fiszel, Merrill Kraines, M. Steven Langman, Beryl Snyder, Anthony G. Viscogliosi, Kitty and Nicholas Brady, Bonnie and Robert Konigsberg, James P. Riley Jr., Michael Gardner, Lance West, Rory Riggs, and Gary Bettman.

In addressing the crowd of approximately 630 guests, Robert I. Grossman, MD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center, said, "HJD's legacy of innovative care stretches back over a century, and because of your support, the boundaries of science and medicine will continue to be pushed at HJD as they combine cutting-edge research, advanced clinical practice, innovative rehabilitation care, and compassionate care and wellness services for patients with bone, joint, muscle, or connective tissue conditions. Our exceptional faculty and staff continue to provide excellent care for the ever-increasing share of our population that is being affected by musculoskeletal conditions, and we are pleased to celebrate their work with you this evening."

In addition to Dr. Grossman, Steven B. Abramson, MD, senior vice president and vice dean for education, faculty and academic affairs, director, Division of Rheumatology, and Joseph D. Zuckerman, MD, the Walter A.L. Thompson Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and surgeon-in-chief at HJD, served as physician chairs of the gala.
