Indego Africa’s Ibirori! A Celebration of Rwandan Progress

On Thursday, December 11, 2008 at CUE Art Foundation in Chelsea, over 175 attendees commemorated the promise and potential of Rwanda at Ibirori! A Celebration of Rwandan Progress.

The event raised over $10,000 for Indego Africa, an innovative nonprofit built upon the belief that women in Rwanda can deliver themselves out of poverty. It was a vibrant, festive night, with special guest Samantha Brown from the Travel Channel’s “Passport to Great Weekends” hosting a live auction for a limited edition Indego Africa agaseke basket, one month of Nalini classes, and the highlight . . . a dance with Samantha Brown on camera. Everyone is excited to see the highlights on the Travel Channel’s “Holiday Weekend in NYC” episode!
Indego Africa’s supporters braved downpours of freezing rain to join in the celebration, enjoying an open bar sponsored by Reyka Vodka and Red Stripe; a grooving 4-piece jazz band; a farm-fresh ice cream stand by the wonderful women at Blue Marble Ice Cream (two stores in Brooklyn, one opening soon in Rwanda!); remarks by Indego Africa’s Founder & President Matt Mitro; a photography exhibit of the women and children of Indego Africa by Indego Africa’s own Ben Stone; a silent auction with dozens of great items, including VIP Daily Show tickets; and a collection of beautiful Indego Africa products that were scooped up by people looking for perfect holiday gifts.
Indego Africa sells unique handicrafts made by its Rwandan partner cooperatives and returns 100% of the profits, thereby delivering to its partners a real stake in their own development. Indego Africa not only ensures a living wage of two to four times the national average, but its Rwandan team of instructors also provide long-term training in key business skills like bookkeeping and information technology. All proceeds from Ibirori! went directly to these training programs.
Stay tuned for Indego Africa’s next NYC event this spring…
