JDRF Benefit: Walk to Cure Diabetes

JDRF Benefit: Walk to Cure Diabetes

Around 2,500 people participated in Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes at the new waterfront, Centennial Square, in downtown West Palm Beach on March 6, 2010.

The Walk is projected to raise more than $250,000 with all proceeds going toward research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications; coming close to goal and matching previous years despite the economy.

The Walk began at Centennial Square and went north to Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard; beginning at 10 a.m. when Smith, Mayor Lois Frankel and U.S. Representative Ron Klein cut the balloon ribbon. Walkers were able to enjoy breakfast, compliments of The Fresh Market, Fresh Point Produce, Publix, Riverside Bank, NuGo Nutrition Bars, and Starbucks, and lunch, compliments of Pizza Girls and Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches.

Fitness Redefined energized the morning crowd with a warm-up routine while WRMF 97.9 FM’s Danny Czekalinski and Boogie Brent of Boogie Brent and Co. Inc. entertained the crowd with music and commentary.

Before and after the Walk, children had the opportunity to play in the children’s tents, get their faces painted and enjoy arts and crafts with Resource Depot. A bounce house and slide were donated by LaF-A-Lot and Ronald McDonald joined to clown around.

Major sponsors include: Shoes For Crews, LLC, Bluegreen Corporation; The Palm Beach Post; WRMF 97.9 FM; Roosth Construction; Florida Crystals Corporation; Office Depot Foundation; Steinger, Iscoe and Greene, P.A.; Sterling Organization; and Union Square. These sponsors, among others have helped JDRF, the leading charitable funder and advocate of Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide, donate more than $1.4 Billion to diabetes research since its founding in 1970. Approximately 82 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to support research and education.
