Local Youth Changing Lives

Reno, Nevada (May 15, 2010) - Created by High Sierra Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and in honor of its initial community launch.

Project Prevent, a community based education program, coordinated by youth volunteers, provided a FREE Community Health Fair for local elementary, middle and high school students and their families. Participants can expect an exciting, informative and hands-on event offering FREE sports physicals, dental screenings and varied school required immunizations based on eligibility.
T-dap immunizations, required for 7th grade entry, will be offered at no cost. Other activities will include hands-on CPR instruction, oral health screenings, stroke awareness, etc. Participants can expect raffle prizes, bike give-a-ways, a bounce house and informative health information from professionals in the area.

The High Sierra AHEC center believes that prevention is a proactive process of advocacy, education and guidance that promotes the well-being of individuals and society. It provides a conscious choice to meet the challenges and transformations of life by creating an environment that promotes healthy behaviors and lifestyles. Coordinated by local youth volunteers, this event promotes youth leadership and empowerment and encourages the adoption of healthy lifestyles and behaviors.

The mission of High Sierra AHECs Project Prevent initiative is to empower northwestern Nevada’s youth to create proactive prevention programming, encouraging their peers to adopt healthy decision making through education and leadership.
