National Association of Women Business Owners - NYC-Signature Awards

Kudos to Sandi Webster and Ann Sachs, Co-Chairs of The 2009 Signature Awards Committee for the New York City Chapter’s National Association of Women Business Owners.

Three exceptional non-profit leaders were honored at the annual Signature Awards gala held at Cipriani's, The Rainbow Room, located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York. Their decision to honor women in non-profits was a first for the chapter and was a fitting acknowledgement of women who are currently demonstrating superior organizational and community leadership in these challenging economic times.
1. The Lifetime Achievement Award - Donna Colonna, Services for the UnderServed. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognized women who best exemplify the commitment, determination and endurance it take to create a successful, long-term business and who has succeeded in making her organization a household name. The award presenter was Carolyn P. Powell, SUS Chair of the Board and former Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, Corporation for Supportive Housing.
2. The Master Award - Ana L. Oliveira, The New York Women's Foundation®. The Master Award honored the achievement of a woman who owns and operates a mature company and continues to succeed by being constantly innovative - shifting her strategic focus, incorporating new technology, expanding her market or increasing her staff. The award presenter was Betsy Gotbaum, NYC Public Advocate.
3. The Promise Award - Chloe Drew, The Council for Urban Professionals. The Promise Award individually recognized the woman whose business has the promise of breakthrough success based on innovation and progressive product and/or service plans. Nell Merlino, Founder, President and CEO of Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence and the Make Mine a Million $ Business Program was the presenter.
Special recognition was given to two non-profit organizations. The Master Certificate of Recognition acknowledged Fran Brown of The Alan T Brown Foundation to Cure Paralysis. The Promise Certificate of Recognition was given to Janelle Lin of Step Up Women's Network-NY. Very touching letters were read from family members and colleagues.
Olympian, Bonnie St. John, who was once again the Mistress of Ceremonies, kept everyone in stitches with her political and up-to-date “Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road” jokes along with hysterical celebrity impressions.
This event was made even more memorable as this was the last Signature Awards that will be held in the famous Rainbow Room, which will close in June 2009. The staff went above and beyond to ensure a fantastic evening. This was also the last Signature Awards event for NAWBO-NYC’s current and outgoing President, Tasha Norman. As was stated in Ms. Norman’s introduction, “my talent is listening, troubleshooting, finding solutions, creating value, staying on budget, exceeding expectations, and delivering success without letting anyone see me sweat.” A job well done, Ms. Norman.
