New Yorker for New York Awards Gala

Citizens Committee for New York City hosted its annual New Yorker for New York Awards gala to acknowledge leaders in educations, arts and civic engagement who make our city a vibrant home.

The black-tie event featured a tribute to Osborn Elliott, co-founder of Citizens Committee for New York City and former deputy mayor for economic development, who died on September 28th. It was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria with the reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. and dinner and program at 7:30 p.m.

The four New Yorkers honored:
Philippe de Montebello, who retired after 31 years as Director and Chief Executive of the Metropolitan Museum of Art - New Yorker for New York Award Under. Mr. de Montebello’s direction, the Metropolitan Museum assembled the largest art collection in the Western Hemisphere. Acknowledged as one of the world’s foremost authority on art, Mr. de Montebello expanded educational programs and exhibition space to increase public access to art. Today, the museum is one the city biggest attractions for New Yorkers and visitors alike.

Judith Jamison, Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater - Elizabeth Chapin Award for Leaders in the Arts. As artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for almost 20 years, and a dancer and choreographer for more than 40 years, Ms. Jamison’s outstanding contributions to performing arts in New York City and worldwide are unmistakable. As a highly regarded choreographer, Ms. Jamison has created works for many companies. She is also an advocate for arts education, spearheading initiatives to bring dance to the public.

Richard Kahan, Founder and CEO of the Urban Assembly, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Award for Lifetime Public Service. The Moynihan Award recognizes Mr. Kahan’s commitment to public service, which prompted him to leave a successful career in real estate to start the Urban Assembly, a network of New York City public schools in under-resourced neighborhoods. With Mr. Kahan at the helm, the Urban Assembly has leveraged partnerships - from the Parks Department to the Loews Corporation - to strengthen public education. Mr. Kahan is also a founder of Take the Fields, a nonprofit which ensures that kids in the city have access to sports facilities.

Yonnette Fleming, Vice President of Hattie Carthan Community Garden, Osborn Elliott Award for Community Service. An immigrant from Guyana, Ms. Fleming epitomizes the activist spirit of New York City. Ms. Fleming has successfully expanded the role of the Hattie Carthan Garden into a vibrant community center. Committed to bringing more locally grown fresh food to the Bed-Stuy neighborhood in Brooklyn, she and her neighbors have been instrumental in organizing an annual food and film festival at the garden. They are now working to develop a “No Child Left Inside” curriculum to facilitate outdoor learning, gardening, and nutrition awareness among local children.

The guests marched down the hall to the Gaelic tunes of the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and danced to the music of Peter Duchin and his Orchestra. The evening also featured performances by student dancers from The Ailey School and bass-baritone David Pittsinger.

Proceeds will go to the new Osborn Elliott Building Blocks Fund to support ten outstanding resident-led volunteer neighborhood groups in low-income neighborhoods throughout New York City. Founded in 1975 during the city’s fiscal crisis, Citizens Committee mobilizes volunteer groups to take civic action to improve life in New York City’s neighborhoods. Hundreds of block and tenant associations, community gardens and youth-led groups have seen their ideas come to fruition thanks to support from Citizens Committee for New York City. As the current economic crisis deepens, enterprising New Yorkers are rolling up their sleeves once again. And these self-helping New Yorkers are turning to Citizens Committee for New York City for information, training and resources to start or expand their community-improvement initiatives.
