Phipps Houses Annual Community Builder Awards dinner

JPMorgan Chase CEO of Retail Financial Services recognized at annual Community Builder Awards.

Phipps Houses, the largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing in New York City, recently held its annual Community Builder Awards dinner to celebrate the development, enhancement, and perpetuation of New York City communities. This year's award was presented to Charles W. Scharf, Chief Executive Officer of Retail Financial Services at JPMorgan Chase, for his leadership at one of the nation's major financial institutions, which has maintained a long-term commitment to building New York City's communities.

Phipps Houses President and CEO Adam Weinstein and Phipps Houses Chairman Ronay Menschel presided over the evening at 583 Park Avenue on Tuesday, September 22nd. The program featured remarks by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and U. S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, and NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development Commissioner Rafael Cestero presented the award to Mr. Scharf. A highlight of the evening was a video about Phipps' current housing construction and several Phipps CDC programs that meet critical educational and financial needs in the Bronx community, and are part of the City's Economic Opportunity initiative.

The event raised more than half a million dollars to benefit Phipps Community Development Corporation (Phipps CDC), the nonprofit affiliate of Phipps Houses led by Executive Director/CEO Stephen Tosh. Phipps CDC provides comprehensive educational, vocational and social services as well as community enrichment programs to more than 8,000 children, teens and adults in low-income neighborhoods of the Bronx and Manhattan.

ABOUT THE HONOREE

Charles W. Scharf is Chief Executive Officer of Retail Financial Services and a member of the Operating Committee at JPMorgan Chase. He is responsible for more than 20 million customers across the country, including more than one million in New York. Mr. Scharf became head of Retail Financial Services in 2004. Since then the bank has added bankers, branches and ATMs to service communities. Chase's commitment to New York City communities has also made it a principal financial underwriter and tax credit purchaser for affordable multifamily housing construction and preservation. Chase was early in recognizing that inner-city community investment and banking is good business, and consequently has earned the highest rating for Community Reinvestment Act investments and leadership. Complementing these investments has been JPMorgan Chase Foundation's generous grant-making program to community organizations.

The Community Builder Awards event co-chairs were Richard Richman, Chairman of The Richman Group, Inc. and Alan Wiener, Managing Director of Wachovia Multifamily Capital Group. The dinner was well attended by more than 400 leaders in real estate, finance, housing development, and public service.
