PRATT INSTITUTE LEGENDS 2008 GALA

Legends Award designers and Pratt alumni Ian Collings and Britt Kapec

October 17, 2008 – More than 400 guests attended Legends 2008 -- Pratt Institute’s largest annual benefit -- which raised $425,000 for student scholarships through ticket sales during a festive and glamorous event on October 16 at Pier 61.

Pratt honored arts advocate and author Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel and world-renowned artists Takashi Murakami and Julian Schnabel as distinguished individuals whose accomplishments and values resonate with those of Pratt.

Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel was introduced and presented her award by Kent Barwick, President of the Municipal Art Society. Entertainer and columnist Dick Cavett gave a humorous introduction to his friend and Montauk neighbor Julian Schnabel. Arnold Lehman, director of the Brooklyn Museum, introduced honoree Takashi Murakami, whose solo show at the Brooklyn Museum earlier this year was a huge success and the second largest exhibition in the museum’s history.

Other special guests included Ingrid Sischy, international editor, Vanity Fair; Larry Gagosian, art dealer and gallery owner; Edward Albee, playwright; Michele Oka Doner, internationally acclaimed artist and designer; Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, renowned portrait photographer and filmmaker; Juliana Terian Gilbert, Pratt Trustee and chairman of The Rallye Group; and Marc Rosen, Pratt Trustee and award-winning designer.

Legends 2008 was hosted by Pratt President Thomas F. Schutte and Board of Trustees Chair Mike Pratt. Pratt Trustees Kurt Andersen and Amy Cappellazzo along with Pratt friend Marjorie Kuhn served as co-chairs for the event. Journalist Charlie Rose was the master of ceremonies.

“What Pratt does is what I try to do,” said Rose at the beginning of the award presentations. “Our curiosity is the same – it’s about film and architecture and design and so many other subjects that have to do with defining who we are as a civilization, figuring out the nature of the human condition, and trying to get a sense of how we’re all in this together and what the journey is about…. That’s what Pratt is about, in terms of the people that it trains to take roles in this vital function. Civilization is defined by people who make this art, who write these poems, and who show us the way to the truth.”

The Legends 2008 ceremony came to a moving close when recent Pratt graduates and Legends 2008 award designers Britt Kapec and Ian Collings went up to the podium and dedicated their designs to the evening’s honorees, who inspired them and drove their creative process, which began months in advance of the event and culminated in dynamic awards hand-carved from blocks of aluminum.
