Tell Every Amazing Lady about it; The First Annual T.E.A.L. Walk for Ovarian Cancer

Over 1,000 Amazing Ladies Raise $50k for Ovarian Cancer

The fight against ovarian cancer grew fiercer last month, as years of planning came together for the first annual T.E.A.L. (Tell Every Amazing Lady) Walk in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.

Over 1,000 people from every end of the country came out despite the rainy weather to participate in the 3.5 mile trek through the park, all to help raise money and awareness of this deadly disease that affects 1 in 55 women.

“It turned out great. It was actually how my sister and I envisioned it,” said Louisa
McGregor, founder of the walk who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer herself in 2007.

The walk was conceived two years ago, while McGregor was in a hospital bed. She wanted to join a pre-existing ovarian cancer walk, but was unable to find any sizable ones in New York. So, she decided to make one herself.

“We really need to make a lot of noise,” said McGregor. “And how can the capital of the world not have a really big ovarian cancer walk when this is such a deadly disease?”

However, in her weakened condition, McGregor was only able to think of a name and pick a date for the event. She chose September 2009 as it coincides with National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. She mentioned the idea to her sister and co-founder of the walk, Pamela Esposito and then put it on the back burner to concentrate on her recuperation. Because of this, McGregor didn’t think about a cancer walk again for more than a year later, when Esposito approached her with the parks department applications.

One of the brightest moments of the day came in the form of an amazing donation: a guitar signed by all 4 members of Bon Jovi. McGregor, a huge fan of the band, expressed that she could not be more excited and plans to put the item up for auction very soon to raise more money for the organization.

With the vision complete, and over $50,000 raised already for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, people are asking what’s next for the walk.

“We take it day by day, trying to figure out what’s possible,” said Esposito. “It’s amazing that there’s interest from people all across the country who want a T.E.A.L. Walk in their neighborhood. We’re not sure if we have resources for that, but there is definitely going to be another walk next year.”

Sponsors of the walk included The Lacey Gallagher Cause to Cure Ovarian Cancer which gave money to help offset the cost of the walk. L’Oréal Paris was another big sponsor. Their limited edition “Color of Hope” cosmetic bags were given out to pre-registered participants. These bags are available in retail stores and at www.lorealcolorofhope.com with $5 of every sale going to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

T.E.A.L. Walk is accepting donations all year long. You can visit www.tealwalk.org to make a donation, find out about future events, or to learn more about ovarian cancer.
