The Frick Collection Garden Party
07/15/2010 - By New York, NY

While the Frick Garden Party has been a successful program from the start, this year’s event proved that the fundraiser has truly secured a place on the summer social calendars of supporters and fans of the institution.

The Frick Collection’s Garden Party made its debut in 2008 and was quickly hailed by The New York Times as one of the most memorable social events of the year. Now annual, this benefit reception offers rare access to the museum’s remarkable Fifth Avenue Garden, where guests gather to enjoy a summer evening of cocktails and jazz. Proceeds (nearly $130,000) from the Garden Party will support the full range of programs at The Frick Collection, including educational and curatorial initiatives and Library activities.

A museum in a mansion on Fifth Avenue, The Frick Collection is known for its fine and decorative arts collection and the contemplative quality of its galleries. Its setting is the 1913-14 residence of industrialist Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919), which is surrounded on two sides by elevated gardens.

Although approximately 300 guests were expected this year, nearly 400 attended for a magically and pleasingly comfortable evening outdoors. Bold pink was the dominant color of the night, from dresses to ties to the painted gala chairs. Signature cocktails of lemon and thyme provided cooling refreshment, and the strains of jazz on the main terrace inspired occasional dancing throughout the night. Striking hats on ladies (including several broad-brimmed sculptural examples to one amazing white floral topper) and gents made an appearance as never before, while several boldly colored parasols dotted the lawn as well.

The Fifth Avenue Garden was the focus of the party. Guests were also able to visit a new display in the Cabinet gallery created to mark the museum’s transition in 1935 from private home to public institution, From Mansion to Museum: The Frick Collection Celebrates Seventy-Five Years.
