United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s New York Next Generation Board Speaker

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s New York Next Generation Board Speaker

On Wednesday, March 17, more than 180 young professionals attended a conversation with Robert L. Bernstein,

the former President of Random House and the Founding Chairman Emeritus of Human Rights Watch and U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum historian Dr. Edna Friedberg at NASDAQ MarketSite. The program was sponsored by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s New York Next Generation Board.

Bernstein discussed how as President of Random House he started the Fund for Free Expression, designed protect the rights of authors in the former Soviet Union and how these efforts eventually grew into the founding of Human Rights Watch. In October 2009, in a New York Times op-ed, Bernstein expressed concern that Human Rights Watch and other human rights organizations were unfairly singling out Israel for criticism while ignoring the atrocious human rights records of other countries in the Middle East. While acknowledging the piece was “difficult” to write, he believed it was necessary given the threats facing Israel today.

The Museum’s Next Generation Board is comprised of young professionals who donate their time and financial resources to supporting the Museum’s critical work of educating people around the world about the Holocaust, fighting hatred and antisemitism and working to prevent genocide today. The program was chaired by Julie Kopel and Avi Benus. Glenn Sapadin, the board’s founding member, took part in the presentation with the co-chairs. Over the past five years, the Board has raised over $1 million for the Museum.
